The IUCN Academy of Environmental Law (IUCNAEL) Congress will take place in Tarragona from 30 June to 5 July. For six days, environmental law experts from around the world will discuss issues related to environmental law and energy.

Within the framework of this congress, INSTA will make a presentation on the environmental energy conflicts in the province of Tarragona. This region of Catalonia brings together the main power generation plants in Catalonia, with three nuclear reactors, numerous wind farms, cogeneration plants, solar and hydroelectric plants. To this must be added offshore oil rigs, offshore wind power projects, new offshore oil exploration, a submarine gas storage facility (CASTOR), an already abandoned project for a centralized temporary storage of nuclear waste and the entire electricity transmission network with seven high voltage lines and a new line project that wants to cross the whole province.
All these projects have not been free of social conflicts, debates on the energy model and territorial balance, and numerous open legal proceedings in the form of administrative appeals, cases that have reached the courts, rulings, etc.

INSTA’s presentation will reflect on the different actors involved, the role of environmental law in these conflicts and the energy and territorial balance model.
