INSTA has recently joined the European initiative People4Soil, an independent and open network of European NGOs, research institutes, farmers’ associations and environmental groups concerned about the increase in soil degradation in the EU and the world: erosion, soil sealing, loss of organic matter, compaction, salinization, pollution, landslides and pollution, all these aspects have negative impacts on human health, safety food, natural ecosystems, biodiversity and climate, as well as the economy.
INSTA’s legal and environmental expertise aims to give a boost to the legal tools needed for soil protection, conservation and restoration. It should be noted that the Framework Directive for Soil Protection was withdrawn in May 2014 after eight years. Existing EU policies in other administrative sectors are not enough to ensure an adequate level of protection for all soils in Europe. That is why we will actively contribute to the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) which in 2016 will work to achieve a new regulatory framework in this area.
